Eostreth

Pronounced Eeoh-streth, her name contains the origins of the word Easter and should roll off the tongue in continuous motion.

ORIGIN OF NAME

Eostre or Ostara, the pre-germanic goddess of Spring. In the North (Particularly in the nordic countries) Eostre brought warmth, light, and renewed fertility to land and beast. She is the embodiment of youth, light, and life.

Ugly Duckling Egg

Despite its perfect shape, this egg couldn't appear more lumpy. The entirety of the shell is bathed in gold that glitters in a manner that would be beautiful if it weren't for the smudges here and there that may very well be mud if the sands allowed for such a thing. Angles and bumps cast murky reflections as if warning the onlooker that what lies within may not be a sight for the weak of heart.

HATCHING MESSAGE

Ugly Duckling egg shakes, small cracks forming along its surface. Is it time? Can it really be? She’s been waiting so long for the time to come. Bits of shell flake away and, finally, she emerges! It’s time for this little one’s life to begin.

SWAN PRINCESS GOLD DRAGONET

Feathery soft hide shines with a purity that only enhances the graceful build of this pale gold. Warm sunflower graces her narrow muzzle with nearly black bands across her nostrils and downward, fading into the near white of silicate that stretches over her hide. Her neck is long, the ridges gently sloping toward well-muscled shoulders with patterned markings that could be mistaken for feathers. Her legs are the shade of the sun-drenched sands of Igen, their muscled form bestowing a dancer's poise and ending in webbed toes tipped in delicate golden talons. Her wings are voluminous, their sails awash in auric shades of sunflower only visible once they are unfurled. Her tail stretches behind her like a banner, its spaded tip somewhat large for the structure that supports it, as if such a delicate creature needed an anchoring point.

IMPRESSION POSE

Swan Princess Gold Dragonet has found the one. All those days listening through the shell, all those days never knowing… but now she knows! She has found her light!

IMPRESSION MESSAGE

«There you are and now I’m here!» Starlight flickers over a blackened sky as the voice enters your mind. Suddenly, one by one, lanterns blink into existence and cast reflections in the still waters below. «Do you see? It’s clear now. Myrin, you’re where I’m meant to be!» The darkness lifts and you’re left looking into the whirling eyes of the being that will now be your entire world. «My name is Eostreth!»

PERSONALITY

Eostreth is the perfect picture of a well mannered princess. She doesn’t often complain, but she also has a dedication to avoiding things she doesn’t want to do. Of course, as a princess, she’s also well versed in dramatics! She’s not going to stomp her feet and complain, but will she sigh? Yes. Is she going to drag her feet and look forlorn? Yes. Will she make sure that you’re watching so that none of that performance is wasted? YES. Puppy dog eyes don’t work unless they’re seen.

Eostreth gives the impression of a delicate lady in build and in grace (eventually), but she’s not about to let that stop her. She’s driven by a need to be included with her clutch siblings and she’ll demand to train with them all — even the bronzes. It will take her some time to understand that she’s different, special, that other dragons defer to her and the fact that her very nature means that she’ll always stand apart just a little. Fortunately, as non-competing males, the blues of the Weyr will be a little more approachable and she’ll be able to find fast friendship amongst their numbers eventually.

Eostreth desires to see the wider world. She wants freedom and fun. Myrin's lived an insular life, more so before the Weyr, but still rather limited to the Benden Area with some excursions. Eostreth wants what's Out There, and will be interested in what's happening to Pern at large, not just in her corner of it (and, oh, how she’ll love to fly far and high to get there!). Where Myrin excels at the comforts of home and domestic management, Eostreth wants to bring that comfort to the world.

Eostreth is youth, and youth is hope, and in that she pairs with Myrin perfectly. She'll visit a long-scored patch of land and where others see only the blight left, she'll spot the first creeping tendrils of green starting to re-emerge. She may even try to help that life along a little. Wouldn’t it help to bring in seeds? How about a nice tree or two?

Snowdrop.jpg

From the very beginning, Eostreth will have definite opinions. Is she going to sleep anywhere near the animal pens? No. Is she going to eat the hooves of anything? Absolutely not. «They walk through their own mess. It’s disgusting.» Wherry feet are definitely off the menu.

Don’t think her quirks end there. She’s more than drama, exploration, and picky eating. Her ever youthful personality comes with youthful behavior and, especially during weyrlinghood, she’s going to push as many boundaries as she can. From morning calls to the barracks (and possibly to the Weyr in general as she learns her Voice). Loud, hissing morning greetings with blasts of bright sunshine «GOOD MORNING BENDEN!» She may steal Myrin's hairbrush and drop it in the oil vat. Maybe she'll steal the oil paddle and hide it in Liushuth's couch. Probably steal M'rgann's hammer (Liu's chewtoy!) and tuck it in Dynamith's feed bucket and then encourage Dynamith to prove he can eat the hammer.

Once she’s come into her own, Eostreth may find herself uncertain as to how one goes about being a queen. Especially in those wee hours when she’s awake long enough to wonder. Awake enough to ask questions and advice of those who have been at this for longer than she. Be ready with that extra klah for the rider of her target teachers. They’re going to need it!

Don’t worry! She’s ready with thank you gifts for those whose council she seeks out. Well. You’ll be ready with them to secrete them into the weyrs of those she’s favoring with her curiosity. Sure, those items might have been “harvested” from the residents of the Weyr, but they’ll be things that they all like!

Good luck.

PHYSICAL

Fresh from the shell, she’s awash in silvery grey, giving her hide a fluffy and baby-ish appearance. As that color might suggest, she’s going to itch. Get used to oiling being a big part of your early days. Especially during those growth spurts, when you’ll feel like you’ve only just finished oiling her when her skin requires scrubbing and oiling yet again.

Swanling.jpg

Eostreth’s build is long and graceful. At least, it will be one day. During Weyrlinghood, she’s all limbs and tail, stumbling along and going at involuntary runs to keep herself from impacting with the ground. In particular, her tail is an endless source of frustration. It swings wildly at times as if that extra width at the tip spade is some sort of weight. Don’t worry! One day, she’ll have it all together. Until then, she’s going to need some reassurance that this is all somehow going to end up working out.

You’ll notice quite quickly that your lifemate exhibits an ease in the water just like she’ll (one day) exhibit in the air. It’s little wonder with the bit of extra webbing between her toes that she will lose no time in mastering movement in water. Fortunately, her hide becomes a sunnier color there which means you won’t be left scrubbing for hours between toes and applying foot oil forever.

As she nears adulthood, Eostreth’s hide will shift in color. The fuzzy grey will trend toward white gold that deepens along her limbs and over her narrow muzzle. She may never lose the look of length, but she WILL gain a grace that is unique to her — surely a good sign for later flights.

Swan.jpg

Speaking of flight! Those wings are voluminous, giving her power to propel herself at speeds reachable by only a few of her color. She may not have the agility of a green or blue, but she certainly isn’t lacking. She’ll certainly take top spot for the most agile gold in the Weyr.

MIND VOICE

Light is the language within which Eostreth speaks, illuminating her words and feelings with crystal clarity. Each mood has its own pattern and level of intensity. From the mellow light of contentment to the stormy skies of anger, you’ll never be left wondering just how she feels about anything.

Her happy moments are a warm sunrise over the ocean. The brightness of her feelings reflected on themselves and backed up by the lapping of waves and the warmth of tropical sun on one’s skin. Depending on just how intense her mood is, you might even be treated to the smell of coconuts and saltwater breezes.

Anger comes in the form of dark, stormy skies. Flashes of lightning emphasize every word along with a howling wind. The crisp smell of ozone and the crackling of static along with the feeling of hair raising along the back of the neck (that tingling sensation for dragons) make sure that everyone understands her ire.

In command, she’s glaringly bright. Still waters reflecting the sky above like a rippled mirror edged in sand. She brooks no contradictions.

Somehow, even as commanding as she can be, her tone invites one to obey rather than demanding it.

Sadness is conveyed with gray clouds and downpours from the heavens. It can range from dreary drizzles to cloudbursts, all backed with the feeling of cold humidity and the scent of rain. The sound of drops hitting a metal roof will surround anything she says.

No matter what it is, she has lighting for the mood, all backed up by the sounds and sensations that come with it. She will always be a dragon that follows her own light.
